About the maps...
The NextGen WorldA Maps are a series of 80+ historical reference maps spanning over five millennia of human history. The NextGen WorldA project began in 2017 when I set out to modernize AlternateHistory.com's series of historical "worldA" historical base maps. This format was devised just under two decades ago in the early years of the forum, and became one of the most popular map formats in the online mapping community. Before I began the project, the maps were incredibly rudimentary and highly inaccurate. The format is intended as a historical template which other users can edit with their own fictional alternate history scenarios, with the pixel-art style allowing the maps to be easily edited without expensive software.
This project took upwards of 1000 hours of research, georeferencing, tracing, and editing. I placed the upmost emphasis on internal consistency in borders, historical accuracy, comprehensiveness, and completeness. The result was an unprecedented overhaul, completely unrecognizable from the previous series of maps; indeed, nearly every detail (even the coastline) has been overhauled. These maps have come to be regarded as a gold-standard historical template among the historical mapping community, and are widely used by hobbyist cartographers across the internet.
Many thanks go out to the countless cartographers in the online community who helped contribue to this project - this wouldn't have been possible without you all.
